The City’s Hidden Gem

St Dunstan in the East is one of my favourite places in London. It is a little-known and hidden ruined church which lies half way between London Bridge and Tower Bridge in the City of London.  When you are there it is easy to forget that you are in the centre of the capital.

The Medieval church was devastated by bombs during the Second World War and was never rebuilt, meaning that it is now just a shell.  The only part that remains intact is the tower and steeple.

It has been reclaimed by nature (with a little help from the City of London Architects and Parks departments!!) and trees and vines now creep in through the windows and over walls where the roof used to be.  It is eerie and peaceful all at once.  Its quiet gardens offer a respite from the fuss of the surrounding City.

It is such a tranquil spot that I am reluctant to draw too much attention to it.  Visit it, just don’t tell too many people that it is there 😉
