The Pig near Bath is an old Georgian house set within the Mendip countryside. Everything there revolves around “home grown” food. The eggs at breakfast came from the chickens in the garden and the wine at dinner came from an English vineyard close by.
At the back of the house there was a field and pen with pigs and piglets. The vegetarian in me hoped very much that they were being kept as pets but the plethora of piggy-related items on the menu sadly intimated otherwise! In the huge kitchen garden there were fruit trees, greenhouses full of chilli and tomato plants and beds of vegetables and herbs. My dinner was picked that morning from there.
On our first night we treated ourselves to cocktails, sat on a sofa by the roaring fire, and reveled in the fact that London felt like a very long way away. It claims to be ‘just a restaurant with rooms’ but to say that is to play down the quality of the accommodation. A comfy bed, a beautiful fireplace, a bathroom that was larger than our living room at home and Sherbet Dib Dabs next to the booze in the mini-bar!
We visited The Pig as the leaves were just turning and the last of the last of the summer sun was mixing with the first chill of winter. It felt like the perfect time to appreciate this place.
